Both Matale and Yatawatta Divisional Secretary’s Divisions have been considered as a single Administrative unit   and it was introduced as Matale Assistant Government Agent’s Division until 1985.  Western part of Matale Divisional Assistant Government Agent’s Division has been separated as Yatawatta administrative unit and 6 Gramaniladhari Divisions in southern part have been added to Ukuwela   Divisional Secretary’s Division . According to Separation of Grama Niladhari Divisions in 1989 increased from 19 to 52 divisions . Matale division consists of 224 and villages and 21124 families with total population of 87578.   

The most important historical incident in Matale is writing the thripitaka which was held during the ruling period of king Walagamba in 89-77 B.C.in in Aluvihara, Matale. Therefore this is permanent evidence for human settlements in Matale before Centuries of years. There are folklores receipt of the name “Matale” . It is mentioned that “Mahatala” become as Matale because it is placed in a valley and also the King Gajaba invaded “Soli Rata” and brought and settled 12000 peoples in here it is become as Matale. The center of rebellion against British administration in 1848 was also Matale area and therefore it also called as Matale rebellion .There are number of folktales about the name of Matale . Mahathala has been used for large valley area. It gradually converted as Matale .

Matale Divisional Secretary’s Division situated as a belt with slope from Sothern part to Northern site in Matale District. The elevation of this area is 500 -1200 Meter from sea level and the most highest place is situated in South-West and Western part of the division. Main hills of this area are Athipola Mountain (Wilshear), AsgiriKanda , Makulussa hill. This Mountain chain can be identified as a continuation.    This Geographical incident can easily be seen from Matale town.

Sudurganga is a tributary of Ambanganga flows from Eastern boundary to North in this area and number of water streams which start from western hills added to Suduganga. . Mahawali water issued from Ukuwela Hydro power station flows through this Suduganga to Ambanganga. There are 55 anicuts by which supply water to 20-30 Acres have been established using small water stream in the area. Southern part of Matale Divisional Secretary’s Division receives rainfall. This area is in intermediate zone between Central hills of the country and Northern valley. High rainfall receive in the end of March, April, May, June and October, November . Average rainfall is about 110 Milliliters and Maximum temperature is 30 Celsius degree and Minimum temperature is 17 Celsius degree.
